Zechariah 4:1 ESV
1 And the angel who talked with me came again and woke me, like a man who is awakened out of his sleep.
It would be so easy to overlook, but the prophet here isn’t saying that he was asleep and the angel woke him up, he is saying that he was awakened LIKE someone who is asleep. That’s different.
How much slumber do we live in day to day? How deep is the stupor of everyday life? How much are we truly missing even when we are alert? What beauties exist just outside of the reach of our entertainment fogged vision? Has the busyness and breathtaking pace of life in our pedal to the floor, passing lane only culture created a haze that we can only partially see through?
One of Paul’s prayers in his letter to the Ephesians was marked by the personification of the heart. He prayed that Jesus would “open the eyes of our hearts”. Paul implies that we are missing something, something important. Are we seeing the glory and work of God in each day? When we don’t catch a glimpse of it for awhile do we assume He’s not working or have we just gotten comfortable living in our unconscious state?
Let us be resolved, as God’s people, to pray that He would open our eyes to what He is doing, and as we “wake up” to His work that we would joyfully join Him.
